SDAMLE OMLE
South Dakota Association for Middle Level Education Outstanding Middle Level Educator
Julie Kaltenbach
In my 33 years in education, I have held many positions and many levels. I started in a one-room country school with 16 students in grades K-6. After 7 years, I took a position in Bennett County at a country school. I only had grades K-2, in one-room! Over the years I have taught in several multi-grade rooms, conducted 6-12 band and choir, in-school suspension, self-contained 6th grade, ⅚ ELA, and finally Middle School Math, grade 6,7,8!
I LOVE my job and my subject area! It’s always interesting to get the reaction to the question, “What do you teach?” More often than not, the reaction is negative. “Eeewww! No Way!” My response is always positive! I love them, and I love what I teach! This is my motto: “Love what you do, it shows!”
As I am getting closer to retirement, I have been encouraged to share my years of experience through presenting at conferences and supervising student teachers. My student teacher told me that I had to get young teachers ready to take my place! We had a good laugh! I really enjoy presenting and getting to know other teachers in middle level education. Being the recipient of the OMLE award was definitely a surprise, an encouragement, and a highlight of my career!
Retirement is a few years away, but I am looking forward to spending more time with my family and working on my hobbies. My husband Scott and I have been married for 24 years, this May! Our daughter, son-in-law, and grandsons, Ripley (3) & Ryatt (1), live in the Rapid City area. We hope to move there from Martin, when we retire. I look forward to my hobbies of playing the piano for church services, scrapbooking, and crocheting.
Thank you again for the OMLE! “LOVE what you do, it shows!”
